Introduction to the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of the most significant traditional festivals in China. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, it has a history dating back over 2,000 years. The festival commemorates the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the Miluo River after being exiled by his king. Local people threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating his body, which gave rise to the custom of eating zongzi during the festival.

Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with a variety of activities that reflect its rich cultural heritage. One of the most iconic traditions is dragon boat racing, where teams compete in long, narrow boats shaped like dragons. This thrilling event symbolizes the efforts of local villagers to save Qu Yuan and has become an international sensation, drawing participants and spectators from around the world.

Another important tradition is the consumption of zongzi, pyramid-shaped glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. These dumplings can be filled with various ingredients such as meat, beans, or sweet fillings, depending on regional preferences. People also hang calamus and mugwort at their doorways to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Additionally, children wear colorful silk sachets filled with herbs for protection and blessings.
